Connect USG Router to a Modem
This article was last modified on Mar 30, 2021
As the Ubiquiti USG doesn’t have any embedded modem, a specific one is required to connect to the Broadband network. The Draytek Vigor 120 is one of the most popular modem for ADSL connectivity (or Vigor 130 model which supports FTTx).
Modem configuration
Before connecting it to the USG Router, the Modem needs to be configured:
connect the ADSL RJ11 cable to both wall socket and the Modem ADSL port
connect your computer to the Modem LAN port with a RJ45 Ethernet cable – make sure that your computer is configured to get IP address automatically
power the Modem on
after 1 minute, your laptop should have received an IP address from the Modem, the default subnet is 192.168.2.0/24; the computer should have 192.168.2.10 but it doesn’t matter if it is another one in the same range
open a browser and go to http://192.168.2.1 which is the address of the Modem
no password is required (if asked for any, leave the field blank and type Enter)
comparing with official information from the vendor at https://www.draytek.co.uk/support/downloads/category/2-downloads, make sure you have the latest firmware
if required, update the firmware via the System Maintenance tab
once done, the Vigor 120 will reboot
after reboot, get connected again to the Modem: http://192.168.2.1 and switch to Internet Access >> PPPoE / PPPoA tab
enable PPPoE / PPPoA Client
VPI: 0 (it should already be the default value)
VCI: 38 (it should already be the default value)
Encapulating Type: VC Mux (it should already be the default value)
Protocol: PPPoA (it should already be the default value)
Modulation: Multimode (it should already be the default value)
click OK, the Modem then reboots again
after reboot, get connected again to the Modem: http://192.168.2.1
check that the ADSL status, a SHOWTIME state means that ADSL is now synchronized and that connection works
The configuration of the Modem is not completed. Let’s move to the USG Router.
USG Router WAN configuration
This guide assumes that the USG is already adopted and that you can access the to the Configuration Panel via the Unifi Controller.
The USG is connected as follows:
Get connected to the Unifi Controller, then go to Settings / Networks / WAN / Edit and use following settings:
Connection Type: PPPoe
Username: bthomehub@btbroadband.com
Password: can be anything
Use your preferred DNS (the ones from BT, Google or Clouflare)
Save the configuration
You are now connected to Internet via the Modem + USG Router combination.
